On January 21, 2024, GreatCollections offered a rare 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mule at auction. The example was graded PCGS MS66, the highest grade earned by such a piece from PCGS. The 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mule is undoubtedly the most famous mule coin in United States numismatics. Mule coins in general are considered extremely rare. The PCGS Glossary defines a mule coin as such: “an obverse die is of one coin and the reverse is of another coin.” There are also different types of mule coins, including some that were struck with the same denomination, where an obverse die struck an obverse die, or a reverse die struck a reverse die of the same type, design, etc. Then there are also coins struck from dies representing different denominations, such as the 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mules. There may also be other possibilities, such as a coin struck with the same design but bearing different dates and perhaps also a world coin struck with a U.S. coin and so on.

However, one thing is for certain, mule coins arise under almost impossible conditions, especially the case with the U.S. Mint given its stringent procedures in place to prevent these types of errors from occurring. To this day, it is still a complete mystery as to how and why these 2000-P Sacagawea/Quarter Dollar Mule coins were produced. The first example of a 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mule was discovered in May of 2000, when collector Frank Wallis from Mountain Home, Arkansas, found an example in a roll of Sacagawea Dollars. The 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mules are struck on Sacagawea Dollar planchets; the obverse shows the Washington State Quarter design and the reverse shows the Sacagawea Eagle in flight reverse.

The 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Mule graded PCGS MS66 realized a record price of $194,062 at the January 21, 2024, GreatCollections auction. It was a fun and exciting auction to watch, and congratulations to the new owner in acquiring one of America’s most significant mule error coins.
